The world of vaping has a new and, for its opponents, unexpected ally. Canadian heart surgeon Dr. Gopal Bhatnagar has recently become a vocal supporter of e-cigarette use as a healthier alternative to traditional cigarettes.
“The demonstrated benefits are immediately improved lung function,” says Dr. Bhatnagar of vaping.
As a heart surgeon, Dr. Bhatnagar has seen his share of cigarette-damaged bodies, and he welcomes anything that might lower the number of smoking-related health problems doctors around the world see in their patients every day. He claims that while nicotine may be the addictive ingredient in cigarettes, it’s the thousands of byproducts in them that are most harmful to the body. “Tobacco has over 6,000 carcinogens in it…stuff that also stiffens the arteries which leads to cardiovascular disease,” he said in an interview last year.
Dr. Bhatnagar “strongly believes” that “electronic cigarettes (could be) a very significant answer,” to the many struggles of giving up smoking.
We might not be medical experts ourselves, but the word of a heart surgeon should be enough for lawmakers and citizens alike to wake up to the reality that vaping has its benefits.
