When we talk about how much safer vaping is compared to traditional cigarettes, we don’t often talk about other strong tobacco-delivery systems such as cigars or hookah.
While they are less commonly used, hookah can actually be so much worse for your health than cigarettes.
In a study printed earlier this year in the journal Public Health Reports, the research team looked at hundreds of studies to determine the effects of hookah compared to cigarettes.
The results are startling- and could be very bad news for those who enjoy the occasional hookah session. Researchers concluded that one session, compared to a single cigarette, provides approximately 125 times the overall smoke.
When you break it down into components, this means you’re inhaling 25 times the tar of a cigarette, 2.5 times the nicotine, and 10 times the carbon monoxide, according to the study.
Unlike cigarette smoking, however, the number of people engaging in this habit is on the rise. According to a 2015 study from the University of Pittsburgh Schools of the Health Sciences, almost 1 in 5 high school seniors reported having smoked hookah within the past year. Furthermore, a third of those had reported being regular users.
According to a study from 2014 from the University of South Florida, college students actually believed that hookah was a safer alternative than cigarettes, rather than a considerably worse one.
This erroneous belief that hookah is safer than cigarettes, and the trend for hookah consumption is a concerning trend. Health authorities all over the world have spent years attempting to bring down the dangerous levels of cigarette smoking- only for many people to take up this habit instead. For a safer alternative to either cigarettes or hookah, some people find vaping to be a useful and effective smoking cessation tool.
