Video games are not usually the first thing that comes to mind when you imagine a healthy lifestyle, but they can actually be used to help quit smoking. After finally deciding to quit after many years, this blogger found his video game playing to be invaluable to the quitting process. “I was way too engaged with the game to smoke,” he says, adding that even when he did light up between rounds of the popular game, Halo 3, “by the time I reached for my cigarette again, nothing remained save a long log of ash, burning away in the ashtray.” This was a “powerful moment” for him, when he realised that he didn’t actually need cigarettes to live. Playing video games helped him defeat cigarette cravings in both his body and mind. The game kept his mind busy while the controllers gave him something to do with his hands.
More recently, there have been apps and games developed specifically to help people quit. One of them is called My Stop Smoking Coach. Like many quit-smoking apps, it contains trackers and useful info on quitting, but also has lots of mini-games.
